NEEDS Inc.
Here are our Volunteer Opportunities:
1)
Youth After School Program (YP) – Activity Assistant:
Volunteers assist a program facilitator during an evening after-school youth program for newcomers (refugees and immigrants from 12-17 years old). Volunteers help supervise, tutor/mentor students with homework (usually Basic English) and other activities such as storytelling, playing sports, current technology, art and cooking. This program runs Monday through Thursday from 4-8pm and Friday from 4-6pm throughout the year (except the last Friday of every month)
2) Introduction to Canadian Education Program (INTRO) – EAL Classroom Assistant:
Volunteers assist a classroom instructor to deliver curriculum, help supervise and aid with EAL program components. The participants are newly arrived refugees who are staying in temporary accommodation until they can start school. The participants range in age from 6 to 17, but are divided into two classrooms (6-11 and 12-18). This program runs 8:30am-12:30pm Monday through Friday year-round (except the last Friday of every month)
3) Crime Prevention Program (CP) – This program requires two types of volunteers:
·
Mentors are needed to work with youth aged 6-11 (SERF program) and 12-18 (LINK program) in a program designed to help them settle into Canadian society (workshops, recreational and educational activities and outings). Variable hours. (Minimum commitment of 6 hours per month for 1 year)
·Volunteers are needed to help deliver the day’s programmed activities to the same students who attend INTRO. This program focuses on providing refugee children, youth and families with the support and important life skills they need to successfully settle and integrate themselves into Canadian Society. The goal of the program is to prevent these youth from becoming involved in criminal or gang activities. Various activities provide pro-skills training such as conflict resolution, anger management, decision making, problem solving, and drug and alcohol refusal skills. Information is provided about drugs and alcohol, community and personal safety, the role of police in Canada, gang recruitment and risks, multiculturalism, racism and discrimination. This portion of the program runs from 12:30-3:30 Monday through Friday (except the last Friday of every month) and alternate Saturday afternoons from 12:00-4:30 pm
We request a minimum commitment of 2 hours per week for 3 consecutive months, and we require volunteers to have a clear Criminal Record Check with “Vulnerable Sector Search” completed (if 18 or older) and a clear Child Abuse Registry Check, current within one year. Application forms for both are available at the Agency. A two-hour orientation session is provided for all volunteers.
If any of these opportunities interest you and fit into your schedule, please contact me to make an appointment to fill out an application and learn more about the programs.
